Taran Swan served as launch director and general manager of Nickelodeon Latina America. She unexpectedly had to go back to New York and was facing the decision of whether to appoint an interim leader in her place, and if therefore , who among her team members should your woman select? Origins of Nickelodeon Latin America

Nickelodeon is a cable route for kids 2-11 years old, including a variety of coding (live, action, drama), not only cartoons. Released in the US, Nickelodeon (Nick) started to be the most popular youngsters' television route and widened internationally. Every international Nickelodeon channel had its own on-air identity and slogan. The Latin America market would not look appealing due to currency fluctuations and demographics. The channel looked elsewhere, and Swan helped launch the Germany route in 95 after replacing the unproductive launch representative there, understanding how to make crucial decisions with minimal data. Soon after launch, they switched the route over to local management. Competition had commenced to enter youngsters' media, such as Cartoon Network (1993) and Fox Children Network (1993). Swan felt now was your time to take a step into Latina America prior to the market became saturated. Based on her functionality in Philippines, she was appointed launch director.

Taran Swan

Swan liked Latina America because she observed an opportunity. Kids there only had the most common cartoon shows. She needed to prove her business plan was viable by securing the very least distribution of two million homeowners. Nickelodeon Latin America's (the new venture) sister firm MTV Latina America was doing terribly, so that was not a good sign. But Swan's plan needed sharing of resources with MTV Latin America, which includes personnel. Functioning Toward Corporate Approval

Nickelodeon individuals have " orange colored blood” (reflection of Nickelodeon's color) and so having MTV personnel was different mainly because they were not used to the Nick-style. As well workers would not have an increase in pay for switching over, so incentives were low. Group was known as International Swat Team.

Selling the Route

MTV's affiliate salesforce was in charge of releasing the funnel. Swan wanted the funnel to be just like Nick ALL OF US in that there is no bargain on quality and price. She also needed the route to be for the basic platform, not on the higher end one. Distributors were willing to put them there, yet weren't offering for it.

Attracting advertisers

Handful of barriers to entry in Latin America, so # of cable connection channels rising. No trusted data in ratings or market. Simply 10% in the population had cable, which limited promoters. The team decided to launch 2 separate rss feeds: Northern and Southern, to permit advertisers to focus on more localized markets.

Differentiating the brand name

Computer chip had a solid brand currently. Nick's identification was to match kids with the world through entertainment. Swan's primary worries were to capture attention also to differentiate the brand. As one of her first " big bets” (big risk, big reward ideas), she used Donna Friedman's thought to have a enormous, brand-experience get together called Jornadas. Was a large success.

Beginning to build her group

After party, system for the channel was put into place. Swan did an excellent job relating to the different departments and allowed everyone to contribute suggestions. Some people felt torn due to MTV/Nick logos. Meanwhile, Swan started recruiters in looking forward to of company approval: -Valerie McCarty: seemed to take on mind of marketing and has int'l PAGE RANK experience for TBS. Offers energy and can communicate. -Stephen Grieder: viewed to take more than as business producer (had same situation with Cookware music channel). -Donna Friedman: No specific role provided to her, but she was enthusiastic (albeit single-minded).
